Miegakure (Hidden and Seen)

This painting is a soft pastel of an old very open orchard at Fort Worden. The title and theme is based on miegakure, a Japanese principle of landscape and gardening based on constraint in not revealing full extents of a view and tempering extents of distant view to convey depth and mystery compelling the viewer to explore. I also wanted to convey the warm and high light of a summer afternoon and the rough grass found in abandoned orchards.
